Research summary
The aim of study is too compare the functional capacity and quality of life characteristics of stroke patients who have been using one of three types of exercise for at least the previous 12 months. These are chair-based exercise, aqua exercise and gym-based exercise sessions. This study will primarily employ a cross-sectional analysis design to compare blood pressure as an indicator of cardiovascular health, the Tinetti test to assess balance and gait and the Action Research arm test to assess manual dexterity. The physical tests will be supported by questionnaires to gather information on self-efficacy, motivation and the impact of the stroke on quality of life. Exercise frequency during the previous 12 months will be analysed and a semi-structured interview will be performed to gain the participants’ views on their exercise sessions. The data collected will help to determine whether there are any specific differences in the characteristics or behaviours of the clients between the different exercise groups.
