  • Research summary

Numerous policy documents (1-4) advocate that people living with and beyond cancer should have access to professional support and locally tailored opportunities to help them adopt and maintain physical activity and exercise. The need for exercise rehabilitation within cancer care has been defined as a priority by the Department of Health, cancer charities, patient groups and the clinical community (5-7). There is evidence to suggest that exercise can be beneficial for cancer survivors in improving physical and psychological health and wellbeing (7) alleviating fatigue (8) and reducing risk of further disease (9-12). At present cancer survivors have unmet needs in accessing professional support and cancer specific opportunities to safely engage in exercise.

At present there is no exercise and cancer rehabilitation service in Sheffield. This study will identify the critical success factors that would inform a future exercise and cancer rehabilitation service, from the perspective of those living and beyond cancer and from those stakeholders who have a role in service delivery.

The study aims to consult with two groups of participants 1) those living with and beyond cancer and 2) stakeholders such as clinicians, leisure service providers, local authority, charitable organisations, who may be involved in service delivery. 48 participants living with and beyond cancer will be recruited to six focus groups (face to face interviews will be offered to those not comfortable with a focus group setting). Approximately 14 semi-structured interviews and an on-line survey format (asking the same interview questions) will be offered to stakeholder-participants.

Participants living with and beyond cancer will be recruited by poster, postal and email invitation via existing patient representative panels, charitable groups and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust sites. Stakeholder participants will be recruited via The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine and contacts at Weston Park Hospital.
