Research summary
In acute healthcare settings, a clear understanding of what constitutes excellent end-of-life care is lacking. Most research on this topic has focused on medical aspects and healthcare professionals' viewpoints, leaving a gap in understanding what excellence means to patients, families. While patient-centred care and involving patient and family preferences in end-of-life decisions are emphasized, specific components valued by patients and families are often overlooked. This study aims to bridge this gap by engaging patients, families, and both clinical and non-clinical staff in interviews to comprehend their experiences and perceptions of excellent end-of-life care. This approach will integrate their voices into evidence-based care practices, fostering a collaborative environment. By exploring barriers and challenges faced by these stakeholders, the study strives to uncover insights that can improve end-of-life care experiences. Through this research, we aim to enrich the provision of compassionate and patient-centred care in acute settings, benefiting all involved.
