  • Research summary

Recovery of movement after stroke depends on rehabilitation using repetitive physical tasks, guided by specialist therapy teams who can recognise and treat abnormal “compensatory” movements that hinder recovery.

Stroke recovery can continue for years, but the most rapid recovery occurs in the first weeks and months. The NHS has led the world in establishing specialist stroke services to provide early intensive rehabilitation at home. For every 100 people treated by stroke services, an estimated 6 people avoid going into residential care.

Remotely delivered healthcare increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, making telerehabilitation more acceptable. Software that delivers repetitive, “gamified” exercises, could help staff treat many more patients by reducing time spent travelling and increasing self-directed rehabilitation carried out at patients’ convenience. Several telerehabilitation products exist, including our product EvolvRehab. EvolvRehab uses our simple “RehabKit” connected to a television, to provide repetitive, engaging, virtual reality based “Exergames”, performed independently.

We also aim to show that EvolvRehab with MoveWell reduces resource use in stroke services using health economic modelling, while providing intensive rehabilitation and recovery at home, reducing harmful compensatory movements, and giving people more control over their rehabilitation and recovery.
