Research summary
Treatment failure in HIV positive individuals may be due to development of drug resistance. This is often identified through genotpyic resistance testing of the patient virus when the viral load is found to have increased. The threshold at which genetic mutations associated with drug resistance occur is as yet unknown. This analysis proposes to investigate the viral load threshold at which drug-resistance mutations emerge in patients experiencing viral load rebound on first-line non-nucleocide reverse transcriptase inhibitor-containing regimens and the rate of development of further new mutations, using both routine and high sensitivity assays.
Testing will be performed retrospectively using stored samples and routine population genotyping.REC name
