Research summary
There will be two parts to the study.
In the first part, we will be inviting stories from service users with an experience of psychosis, approaching them via community mental health teams (CMHTs) in Leeds and the city’s survivor-led crisis centre. These stories will be accepted in a wide range of forms and mediums including short stories, diary accounts, video diaries, drawings etc. We aim to collect about 50 stories.
In the second part of the study, we will conduct five to eight ethnographies of service users recruited through CMHTs in Leeds. This will involve one-hour open interviews with the service users, and interviews with family members, friends and healthcare professionals.
The material from both parts of the study will be analysed according to two different methods. First, the written stories from part one and transcripts of the interviews with service users from part two will be run through a piece of software to analyse linguistic patterns. Secondly, all the materials and transcribed interviews will be analysed semiotically. Semiotics is the study of signs - including linguistic and visual signs.
