  • Research summary

The Adolescent Diabetes Needs Assessment Tool (ADNAT) is a app-based tool developed through research. ADNAT helps children and young people with Type 1 diabetes self-manage their condition and helps healthcare professionals know which areas of diabetes management would benefit from extra education and support. The ADNAT app includes items which the children and young people rate to show how they feel they are doing with their self-care, knowledge levels and well-being. The answers and scores from the tool are then sent to the health care team to help them develop a patient-centred treatment plan with the young person during the annual review clinic appointment. There are currently no apps or electronic research informed tools that exist for assessing the health needs of young people with diabetes, and ADNAT fills this gap. The ADNAT app will be used within the diabetes team across the Southport and Ormskirk NHS trust and St Helen’s and Knowsley NHS trust. Parts 1 and 2 of this project will ask young people with diabetes, their parents and health professionals’ views and ideas of using the ADNAT app and if they think it has impacted on how they manage their diabetes. We have developed the design of the study with young people with diabetes and their parents. We will collect non-identifiable data from the ADNAT app. We will carry out short interviews using some activities with young people with diabetes and their parents after their annual review clinic. We will also carry out short interviews with key health care professionals from the diabetes team. In Part 3, we will run group workshops with young people and health professionals who have taken part in the earlier parts of the project, to help work out the best way to provide online training and information about the ADNAT app to young people and health professionals.
