  • Research summary

Womb cancer, also referred to as endometrial cancer, is a cancer of the uterus and is the sixth most prevalent cancer in women globally, with 417,000 new diagnoses reported in 2020. It has been found that womb cancer is more likely to result in mortality amongst Black women compared to white women. Incidence rates for womb cancer between 2012 and 2017 in the UK were higher amongst Black women than South Asian or White women and mortality rates are also higher in non-White ethnicities. Also, in more deprived areas, mortality rates are 17% higher than in the less deprived areas.

A campaign to increase womb cancer knowledge and awareness was developed to be implemented in North East London (NEL). NEL contains some of the most ethnically diverse and deprived areas in England. Between 2011 and 2015, NEL had the worst 1 year survival rate for womb cancer in the UK at 86.3% vs 89.5% over England as a whole. Early diagnosis of womb cancer is key to improving outcomes, since approximately 92% of women diagnosed with early-stage womb cancer (stage I) will survive their cancer for more than five years compared to only 15% when this is diagnosed at the advanced disease (stage IV).Therefore the aim of the campaign will be to increase awareness of post-menopausal bleeding (PMB; the main symptom for womb cancer) in Black and Asian ethnicity women with the hope of encouraging early presentation of PMB to a doctor.

A mixed methodological approach will be taken to conduct an outcome evaluation and process evaluation to understand the impact of the campaign, which will be a multi-component intervention delivered at the community level. Main outcomes will be the number of 2-week wait referrals for womb cancer and womb cancer awareness in NEL.
