Research summary
The Enhancing Parenting Skills (EPaS) programme is a 12-week one-to-one intervention designed to help parents with their children's behaviour problems. The programme is delivered by health visitors.
Sixty health visitors across north Wales, Powys, and Shropshire will screen potential families with children aged 30 - 48 months who, based on parent-report, are displaying behaviour problems. Those parents who score their child above the clinical cut-off for behaviour problems will be invited to participate in the study. All health visitors will be required to identify two families, giving a total sample size of 120. The health visitors will then be required to complete training in the EPaS 2014 programme (three days approximately one month apart). Families will be randomly allocated to either an intervention group or a six-month waiting-list control group (these families will receive the programme but it will be six months after the intervention group enabling a comparison of groups).
Outcome measures will be collected during home visits at baseline (before the start of the programme), six months later (before the control group receive the programme), and twelve months later for the intervention families only. The outcomes include measures of child behaviour, parenting skills, parental mental health, child language skills, demographic information, as well as a direct observation of parent-child interaction.
