Research summary
In April 2013, the partnership between Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partner, HMP Eastwood Park and the South Gloucestershire Drug Action Team brought together a re-role of B wing as a drug recovery unit, allowing access to forty-three beds. This enabled the delivery of a recovery abstinence-based programme. The recovery unit has been open for one year and has demonstrated positive impacts on prisoner engagement and their environment. The project stakeholders have commissioned the University of the West of England, Bristol to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme in terms of short, intermediate and long term health and wellbeing, offending behaviour, mental health and family cohesion. The evaluation will employ a mixed methods longitudinal design, to provide a broad analysis of the effectiveness of the Recovery Unit at HMP Eastwood Park. It will investigate barriers and complexities at individual, group and institutional levels that impact on the individual’s experience during their recovery journey. In particular, it will seek to measure and understand changes in Recovery Capital and treatment trajectories among participants engaged with the programme.
