Research summary
Dementia is a neuropsychiatric condition of old age featuring progressive cognitive impairment and loss of independent living skills. The proposed study will evaluate the introduction of the SPECAL approach to the care of people with dementia. The study will begin by training four members of Oxleas NHS Trust mental health services for older people as SPECAL course facilitators. The course will then be delivered to three groups of eight family carers, with assessment before and after the course. It is intended that this feasibility study will be followed by an exploratory trial and then a multi-centre definitive trial.
