  • Research summary

Bad dental bites (malocclusions) occur when either the teeth or jaws do not fit together. If there is severe mismatch between the upper and lower teeth and jaws, this mismatch cannot be treated with dental braces only and require a surgery. Usually, the patient goes through a course of treatment with braces prior to surgery to tip the upper and lower front teeth to their normal angles which allows a proper fit of the jaws during the surgery.
As the NHS trying to direct the financial resources to those in most need for treatment, oral health indices were used to categorise malocclusions. One of them, Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Needs (IOFTN) which consists of 5 grades; with only grades 4 and 5 are being funded by NHS. We believe that some malocclusions with grades 1, 2 or 3 could change to higher grades (4 or 5) when the front teeth are tipped into their normal values.
Also, the width and length of the dental arches might change after treatment with braces prior to the surgery. Few studies investigated the changes in width as part of their methodology. However, there is no study have evaluated the changes in the terms of length.
The aims are 1) assess if the IOFTN grade changes after treatment with braces and 2) to evaluate the changes of dental arch.
This study involves patients with Class II (lower jaw far back to the upper) and Class III (lower jaw too far forward) malocclusions who treated with braces and surgery between 2005-2020. A sample size of 60 patients (30 Class II, 30 Class III) will be recruited from the archives of the orthodontic department at Edinburgh Dental Institute. Their radiographs, study models and photographs will be evaluated and measured. The study will last from July 2020 to September 2021.
