Research summary
This proposal seeks to understand and demonstrate ways to overcome barriers to adoption of modelling and analytical techniques in healthcare. ABCi will achieve this by building organisational capability for modelling and analytics and evaluating its impact and spread within a University Health Board.
There is compelling evidence from other industries demonstrating the benefit of mathematical modelling and applied analytics to complex decision making. Whilst these techniques have been used in healthcare since the 50s, widespread adoption lags far behind other industries. In 2018 healthcare planning continues to rely on deterministic analytical techniques that likely result in incorrect conclusions, often lacking the analytical rigor required. Whilst there is an expanding literature base regarding the use of simulation and modelling in healthcare there is barely any published evaluation of implementation in practice, the impact of modelling, or the sustained use of such tools and techniques. Many authors and practitioners have identified issues that result in failure to adopt such techniques.
These issues can be overcome. ABCi have developed a programme to build modelling and analytical capability within an organisation. We are now looking to further develop the programme, and more deeply evaluate its impact so we may more effectively share our learningREC name
