Research summary
Cancer patients having treatment face challenges in terms of malnutrition and weight loss which potentially had detrimental effects on their quality of life. Depending on the cancer type and treatment they have, patients experience a range of side effects including nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, xerostomia, mucositis, swallowing difficulties as well as taste and smell alterations. These side effects could have an impact on their daily food intake. Patients on chemotherapy experience taste and smell alterations whereas those administered radiotherapy experience swallowing difficulties both affecting quality of life.
Currently available food supplements offer different oral nutritional support, but the sensory requirements or food preferences of patients are not always addressed in these products. This study aims to evaluate an iced meal supplement for cancer patients considering their nutritional and sensory requirements and promoting the pleasure of eating at times in their treatment journey where it is needed most.REC name
