Research summary
Surgical trainees currently have their surgical performance assessed using a particular assessment form called the procedure-based assessment (PBA). In response to some issues experienced by trainees and their trainers with the PBA, we have developed a new assessment, called the Generic Operative Supervised Learning Event (GOSLE). We believe that the GOSLE is easier to use and will improve surgical training, and through improved training have a positive impact on patient care.
The aim of this study is to investigate whether the GOSLE reliably measures how well a surgical trainee performs an operation. To do this, we plan to videotape operations that are routinely performed by trainees under consultant supervision. We shall then distribute the recordings to several experienced surgeons who will rate the trainees’ performance using the GOSLE. The data will be analysed to determine how reliable an assessment the GOSLE is.
