Research summary
TEWV Trust aims to create a workplace where there is a supportive, learning and open culture underpinned by the Trust's values. One way of tracking the progress of this objective is by regularly gathering information regarding the thoughts, feelings and/or attitudes of staff members toward their workplace. This could be done by evaluating their sense of autonomy, belonging and competence, according to the existing ‘ABC’ model of workplace perception. Because these are not currently evaluated explicitly and adequately covered by existing surveys, such as the NHS Staff Survey, we wish to evaluate the feasibility of using an existing questionnaire that has been validated- the Work-related Basic Need Satisfaction scale (W-BNS). Before using some, or all of the items of the W-BNS, we need to evaluate and confirm that the psychometric properties of the instrument are similar in an English speaking population; this questionnaire has previously only been validated in Dutch. We wish to check that the three dimensions (relating to the ‘A[utonomy]’, ‘B[elonging]’ ‘C[ompetence]’) identified in the Dutch validation are approximated in our Trust staff respondents. It may also be that, in order to reduce burden on staff participating in such regular ‘temperature checks’ that not all 18 items of the W-BNS are required to briefly evaluate workplace perceptions. Additionally, as needs ‘frustration’ has been shown to have a very different impact on relevant work and life outcomes compared to needs ‘satisfaction’ the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS) will also be used. The BPNSFS has been validated for this purpose in an English speaking population. Therefore the scores from the BPNSFS can be used as evidence of convergent validity of the W-BNS in an English speaking population. That is, evidence that the two questionnaires are measuring the same underlying construct.
