  • Research summary

At present the Occupational Therapy team in the Durham and Darlington Chronic Fatigue Service are in the process of selecting an outcome measure that is client centered and measures a change in people's everyday living skills.

The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) is an Occupational Therapy Outcome measure and has been selected to be evaluated for the Fatigue Service. The COPM is client centered and focuses on the areas of self care, work and hobbies.

The COPM has been applied in many chronic conditions and has vast amounts of literature. research however is limited in the use of the COPM with people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

This research aims to investigate if this measure, measures change in people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome after a course of occupational therapy.

The COPM will be used as an initial assessment for people who have been newly diagnosed with Chronic fatigue Syndrome and referred to the service by their GP. The initial assessment will be a baseline as to how the individual perceives they can manage their activities of daily living. From this treatment will be planned from the individual's priorities. The COPM will then be repeated approximately 6-8 weeks later to measure change.

The overall aim therefore is to evaluate whether the COPM can be implemented into the Chronic Fatigue Service.
