Research summary
Evidence is not available for the utility of simulation based training (SBT) on patient outcomes. It is, however being increasingly used as part of training both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, in association with a reduction in training and working hours and an increasingly consultant delivered service.
It is hypothesised that SBT may be superior to traditional lecture and bedside teaching methods by allowing standardised exposure to clinical scenarios and detailed debriefing on performance that is not available with other methods, all in a safe environment.
Trainee doctors in cardiology and general medicine will be recruited and randomised to undergo either SBT or traditional teaching, and subsequent assessments of their performance and attitudes of trainers, trainees and patients will be made.
Anonymised video assessments of participants assessing patients before and after the training will be conducted, as well as surveys and written assessments.
This study will be conducted at NHS sites across the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery.REC name
