Research summary
An intervention study to evaluate Guidepost, a health professional led, telephone based coaching service built on a digital platform. We aim to evaluate whether this programme of coaching delivered over the phone and involving dietary, exercise and lifestyle education support, as well as support for patient led insulin titration, can improve both glycaemic control and quality of life in people with type 2 diabetes treated with insulin.
The study employs a randomised design with participants either attending training immediately (immediate Guidepost) or acting as waiting list controls and attending “delayed Guidepost” training 6 months later. Recruitment will be from all of the five secondary care diabetes clinics in Lothian.
Participants will comprise up to 200 adults with type 2 diabetes on insulin for at least 6 months and moderate or poor glycaemic control. The main outcome measures will be glycated haemoglobin(HbA1c), severe hypoglycaemia and impact of diabetes on
quality of life as measured by the ADDQoL validated questionnaires.REC name
