Research summary
The management of fatigue is a clinical priority for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, to date interventions for fatigue in IBD patients are still sparse. The main objectives of this longitudinal study are to explore levels of fatigue in IBD patients and evaluate the contribution of socio-demographic, clinical and psychosocial factors which are associated with the variance in fatigue symptoms over time. Outpatients presenting at IBD clinics in two London hospitals will be asked to complete self-report questionnaires measuring their levels of fatigue, IBD-related quality of life and work impairment together with potential psychosocial correlates of fatigue at baseline, and then 12 and 24 months later. The questionnaires take 20-30 minutes to complete and can be returned by post or online. Clinical and socio-demographic data, including disease and medication-related information will be retrieved from patients’ medical notes. Several factors are likely to explain fatigue levels and increasing our knowledge of the relationship between fatigue and modifiable factors may lead to better ways to help patients cope with fatigue and its consequences. We will use the results of this study to develop new treatments for IBD fatigue.
