Research summary
Fatigue symptoms are common in haemodialysis patients. This study aims to explore levels of fatigue in haemodialysis patients in order to understand how fatigue symptoms change over time. Several factors are likely to explain fatigue levels including psychological factors such as patient’s beliefs about their fatigue levels.
Patients will be asked to complete several questionnaires (including a fatigue questionnaire) soon after providing informed consent. Patient will be asked to do this during a stable dialysis treatment session. The same measures will be given again 12, 24 and 36 months later. At each study time point standard information from patients routine blood tests (conducted as part of standard dialysis care) will be recorded from the medical notes.
Understanding the severity of fatigues symptoms in dialysis patients and increasing our knowledge of the relationship between fatigue and psychological factors may lead to better ways to help patients cope with fatigue and its consequences.
