Research summary
Cardiac rehabilitation is a simple, inexpensive, low tech treatment which has been shown to reduce cardiac-related illness and re-admissions following cardiac events. Despite this, uptake of cardiac rehabilitation services is poor. Janssen are working with the NHS to develop a new service model to enhance care for patients and hopefully increase uptake and persistence with rehabilitation. The new model will be piloted at Buckinghamshire NHS Trust in 2013. This observational research study will evaluate the pilot service to understand if it is effective by looking at changes in patient performance and compliance as well as patient and staff satisfaction. The study will involve collection of anonymised outcome data from patients’ routine clinical records by the normal clinical care team and, in a smaller cohort, completion of patient satisfaction questionnaires on 3 occasions over 1 year after the introduction of the new service and a staff satisfaction questionnaire before and after introduction of the new service model. A small service mapping (by staff interviews) and time and motion (by timing of staff providing the service)study will also be undertaken to accurately describe the service.
