Research summary
Incontinence leads to worry about smell, relationship problems and embarrassment of losing large volumes of urine in public, leading to reluctance to leave the house and interact with people. Over time, it leads to poor health due to loss of fitness, local skin problems, social isolation, depression, loss of confidence, loss of mobility, dependence and frailty. Incontinence happens in 1 in 4 women and can impact quality of life as much as other chronic conditions as diabetes.
This study aims to improve the diagnostics (why does this woman have this problem) of prolapse and incontinence that should lead to improvements in surgical outcomes (correction of anatomy and relief of symptoms).
The questionnaires are internationally used validated tools that will help us to monitor the patients' symptoms before and after surgery in a structured way. Ultrasound is an imaging tool for the observation of anatomical changes before and after surgery. We will do a comprehensive, structured review of symptoms using validated clinical questionnaires, clinical scoring systems and ultrasound.
Normality is sometimes difficult to define, which is why we plan to give questionnaires and perform scans on healthy volunteers without symptoms (control group).
Study design:
1. Questionnaires and an ultrasound scan for patients before and after interventions for incontinence and prolapse.
2. Questionnaires and an ultrasound scan on healthy volunteers.REC name
