Research summary
Tuberculosis (TB) in children is relatively neglected and most TB programmes focus on adults. There are little data to guide an evidence-based approach to managing children with TB and yet childhood TB presents unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Currently most guidelines extrapolate adult data to make inferences about how children should be diagnosed and treated. Due to the relatively small numbers of children who present with TB in developed countries, it is important to collaborate between centres to build up enough cases in order to inform practice. This study seeks to build a database of children (less than 18 years) at multiple centres in Europe who have been exposed to and treated for TB. The study has been approved and is recruiting children at other sites in Europe.
