Research summary
The study aims to gain a better understanding of ambulance non-conveyance to make improvements to patient safety. Non-conveyance is when an ambulance crew attend a patient following a 999 call and the patient is not transported to the Emergency Department. The study has two phases to it: an observation phase and an interview phase. Recruitment is separated for the two phases. Phase one entails the researcher accompanying ambulance clinicians on shifts and observing the process of non-conveyance as it happens in real life. Phase two entails the researcher conducting interviews with clinicians, patients and carers to understand their perceptions of risk and uncertainty of non-conveyance and to explore the challenges and facilitators of patient safety. The researcher is a PhD student and her supervisor is the Chief Investigator.
