Research summary
We are examining the language and methods of communication utilised by practicing radiologists. It is in collaboration with the National Imaging Academy. We will be observing radiologists, reporting radiographers and trainee radiologists in their workplace, and examining the reporting style that they use to record diagnoses by reading anonymised reports. We will not be in the room with any patients at any point in this study. Proper ethnographic and phenomological study of radiologists is an area of research that has not been carried out in NHS hospitals, and the data that we gather from this study can be used to reduce communication errors and evaluate the potential for standardising report writing. Ethnography and phenomology refer to the study of human behaviour. This is also part of a wider project to develop a framework for radiologists to evaluate and implement machine learning and AI technology. We believe that by understanding the methods and styles of communication used by radiologists we can better adapt this framework to be more easily interpreted by the intended audience.
