Research summary
COVID-19 is characterised by a respiratory illness, with high rates of severe pneumonia and a common requirement for hospitalisation for oxygen therapy and ventilatory support. In the UK, data appeared early during the pandemic raising the possibility that COVID-19 could be disproportionately affecting people from black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. Several factors may account for these ethnicity differences, including a greater prevalence of co-morbidities which increase the severity of COVID-19, and social factors such as geography, deprivation and occupation. Few published studies have addressed COVID-19 outcomes and ethnicity in the UK as their primary aim with appropriate analyses. This study aims to address the question of whether a BAME background is associated with a higher risk of poor outcomes in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, allowing the effect of detailed clinical, demographic and socioeconomic factors to be included in the analyses. The design is a retrospective hospital cohort study based on routinely collected data from multiple NHS trusts, collected through existing, NHS trust clinical IT systems.\n
