  • Research summary

Education is an important part of good pain management. One very common form of education delivered by health professionals to patients is Pain Science Education. This type of education explains the underlying biology of pain and its biopsychosocial nature – this is the idea that pain is influenced by biological, psychological, and social things. Pain Science Education attempts to give patients an understanding of pain that is in keeping with modern scientific understanding. To date, studies that have explored patients' experience of this education have not included minority groups and thus we don’t know what their experience of this type of education is. With equality, diversity, and inclusion now recognised as integral to all research, the purpose of this study is to explore the experience of adult individuals from ethnic minority groups with persistent pain of receiving pain science education as part of their care.

A qualitative method will be used where a semi-structured interview will be carried out to explore the experiences of individuals from ethnic minority groups in receiving pain science education as part of their care. The participants will be recruited through gatekeepers specifically - healthcare professionals who deliver pain science education to individuals from ethnic minority groups who are experiencing pain.

The study is expected to last for 12 months in total. Participants are eligible if they are from ethnic minority groups who have experienced pain for three months or more and have received Pain Science Education from a healthcare professional. They must also be able to speak and understand English. The participants will also be asked to provide basic demographic information. The one hour interview will be conducted at Teesside University or an area in North East accessible to the participants (including their home) or it can take place online using Microsoft TEAMs.
