  • Data collection arrangements

The Electronic health record Research and Innovation Database (ERIN) will include all patient level data collected as part of providing patient care at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH). All applications for access to data will be considered by a patient panel and Data Access Committee (DAC). The DAC includes senior CUH staff responsible for data protection and confidentiality. The DAC will ensure that data released for analyses are stored securely and that there is an appropriate data access agreement in place to protect the data. All direct personal identifiers (such as name, date of birth, contact details, hospital or NHS number) will be removed before any data are released. All patient information released as part of the database will be de-identified in accordance with local standards, informed by national guidance and legal precedent.

  • Research programme

Electronic Hospital Records (EHR) contain a wealth of data collected as part of routine clinical care including demographics, medical histories, radiographic images, laboratory test results and many others. The ERIN database will enable clinicians, researchers and innovators to apply for access to de-identified patient data for research, innovation and other projects aimed at improving health, treatment or services. Projects could range from descriptive analyses to large bioinformatics projects using advanced techniques such as machine learning. CUH has one of the most mature EHR systems in the UK and this offers a rich resource for utilising de-identified patient data for research and innovation.
