Research summary
This research aims to identify whether home high-flow therapy in addition to usual medical care following severe exacerbation of COPD can improve clinical, patient-reported and physiological outcomes, compared to usual medical care alone. Patients recovering from severe COPD exacerbation are at risk of readmission or death in the 12 months following index hospitalisation. Current readmission prevention strategies, including optimisation of pharmacotherapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, telemonitoring and discharge bundles have had limited success in clinical translation. This clinical trial represents a timely opportunity to evaluate home high-flow therapy (HFT). This research will implement CE-marked devices which have the potential to improve clinical and patient-reported outcomes and can be rapidly incorporated into routine clinical care if demonstrated to be clinically- and cost-effective.
