Research summary
The European Prevention of Alzheimer's Dementia (EPAD) Scotland Follow On Study aims to gather continued long term data from a group of participants across the risk spectrum for developing Alzheimer's dementia (AD). This study is based on the EPAD Longitudinal Cohort Study (LCS) which ran from 2016 to 2020 across multiple European centres. During that study participants were enrolled from a number of sources where they were selected for certain known risk factors for AD (such as family history). During the EPAD LCS study participants underwent a number of assessments annually to understand more about their risk factors for AD. We now propose continuing this follow up in a restricted protocol at the NHS Lothian site. We will also be inviting participants from a similar study (the CHARIOT Pro substudy) to join the study. We recognise that the participants of these two studies are not representative of the Scottish population so we will further aim to recruit a new group of participants to reflect the wider population, and will initially do this by only including those without a tertiary education.
