  • Research summary

Constipation is a common condition, but there can be many causes including age, diet, medications, and the gut microbiome i.e. types of bacteria living in the gut.

Enzyme-rich malt extract is a food supplement obtained from the malting process of cereal grains e.g. barley. ERME contains active enzymes that help to break down foods which are normally hard to digest, such as starches. The effects of enzyme-rich malt extract on constipation are unknown, therefore, the aim of this study is to look at the effects of enzyme-rich malt extract on symptoms of chronic constipation.
