Research summary
Our laboratory is a joint Public Health Laboratory (PHL Manchester) and NHS laboratory. Following reports of outbreaks in the USA and Europe of severe respiratory disease caused by Enterovirus D68, Enterovirus was added to our laboratories diagnostic panel for respiratory samples between October and December 2014. Samples were received from across the North West of England; from primary and and secondary care centers. Respiratory samples were tested with an assay that detects any Enterovirus species. Samples that were positive for Enterovirus species were referred to the Public Health England Respiratory Virus Reference laboratory (Colindale, UK)for typing. EVD68 was identified by further, specific testing. In addition to this, clinical details of the EVD68 positive cases were collected and reported to PHE for public health surveillance.
The aim of this study is to describe the basic epidemiology and clinical features of EVD68 in the cohort of cases identified by testing of respiratory samples between October and December 2014.
