  • Research summary

The study aims to explore the factors that ensure the well-being of people living with dementia and their carers during the hospital discharge process and upon return to the community. There is a significant absence of research on the well-being of people living with dementia and their carers during the discharge process in spite of numerous reports and study findings suggesting that patient and care giver well-being is overlooked during this period (Alzheimers Society, 2016; Chenoweth et al., 2015) . Interviews will take place with the carers of people living with dementia via zoom, teams or telephone to discuss their experiences of the hospital discharge before, during and after the COVID 19 pandemic. Interviews will explore whether patient and carer physical, social and emotional needs were addressed during the discharge process, as well as what support mechanisms would be beneficial during the discharge planning process and following discharge into the community. Interviews will also take place with volunteers working with third sector organisations about the support available in the community for this demographic. The findings from this study will identify opportunities for the hospital discharge process to be improved, in relation to addressing patient and carer support and well-being requirements. Hospital discharges before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic will be explored as all periods will be crucial in identifying well-being measures, in the post pandemic context.
