  • Research summary

The Francis report highlighted deficiencies in care for older people and suggested that ‘urgent steps are needed to re-energise and focus the staff on doing what they can do well'. The aim of the EnRICH study is to work with our partner NHS Trust to establish the feasibility, suitability, acceptability, and sustainability of the EnRICH (Enhancing Relationships in Care in Hospital) culture change programme in improving the experience of receiving and giving care for older people. Intervention: Validated questionnaires will be used to profile what is done well in the participating wards (n=12) in the eyes of patients, carers and staff, as well as highlighting what can be improved. Through workshops & communities of practice EnRICH introduces participating wards to relationship centred care [RCC] and the’ Senses framework’ [which identify 6 senses that need to be created for all involved in giving or receiving care: a sense of security, belonging, purpose, achievement, significance and continuity]. Each ward is supported to plan and undertake changes suggested in the profile; later, through re-profiling, wards are helped to understand what differences to patient, carer and staff experience those changes have promoted. Research: Interviews, focus groups, questionnaires will be undertaken with practitioners, patients and family carers in order to identify the factors perceived to either facilitate or inhibit the success of EnRICH on 6 participating wards and also in 6 control wards to see if EnRICH promotes better care and increased job satisfaction, along with normally collected information such as falls, staff sickness etc. The study will last 2 years, with data collection and intervention taking place over 12 months.
