  • Data collection arrangements

We intend to collect information from all patients attending for endoscopic procedures at STH. Currently, STH staff use several electronic systems to collect, store and view data obtained during normal patient care. Data already held on STH clinical database include:
    • Endoscopy data and reports (directly uploaded to the NED).
    • Medical history including comorbidities.
    • Demographics including age, sex, anthropometric measurement, and address.
    • Laboratory test results e.g., blood tests, stool tests, histology.
    • Medications and treatment data.
    • Imaging and radiological data and reports e.g., x-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerised Tomography (CT) scans
    • Endoscopy adjuvants used routinely in clinical practice e.g. capsule endoscopy, enhanced endoscopic imaging (Narrow band imaging, confocal or zoom magnification) and artificial intelligence.
    • Other assessments including patient reported outcomes and measures of quality of life.
These data will be transferred to a secure research database held on NHS servers

  • Research programme

We will perform analyses on retrospective and prospective collected data held in the database to inform our local endoscopy practice, provide an overview of the endoscopy workload, and to improve our understanding of gastrointestinal disease and endoscopic interventions. This database will allow STH to better understand how to make an accurate assessment of outcomes in endoscopy. This will help with the understanding of outcomes of endoscopic procedures and maintain excellence within the unit. In addition, this can provide robust information for changes in clinical care to be made. Requests for access to the data will come primarily from within the Gastroenterology and surgical teams of doctors and clinicians, including partners from the University of Sheffield. In some cases, the data may be used by medical trainees such as Specialist Registrars/Research Fellows and BMedSci students who undertake research projects as part of their training at the Academic Unit of Gastroenterology at STH. Additionally, there may be some requests for access to data from other staff in other directorates of STH. Finally, some data may on occasion be requested from external researchers - this may be as part of collaborative research activity between STH and other NHS organisations, academia or industry.
