Research summary
Barrett’s oesophagus is an acquired condition due to long standing acid reflux in which part of the normal oesophagus lining is replaced by a different cell type. Barrett’s oesophagus increases the risk of developing oesophageal cancer with an annual risk of 0.5%. The aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of looking for Barrett’s oesophagus in patients in the local community. By understanding who is more at risk of having Barrett’s oesophagus, we will be able to better understand who should have endoscopy to look for this condition more effectively in the future. Diagnosing Barrett’s oesophagus allows regular monitoring and early treatment if early signs of cancer are found.
