Research summary
Microscopic vesicles are pinched off from cells in the blood, the blood vessels and surrounding tissue. They carry components of the parent cell to other sites and target cells, and can be damaging. In preliminary studies, we have shown that adipocytes (fat cells) produce microvesicles that impact on the ability of blood vessels to open. We also have evidence these microvesicles circulate in the blood of mice and humans. We wish to use state-of-the-art methods to assess the character of adipocyte vesicles and apply them to model systems in the laboratory that will test their capacity to damage other cells and blood vessels, under conditions which mimic those found in cardiovascular disease.
