Research summary
Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis (EPS)is a serious but rare complication of peritoneal dialysis. It is characterised by bowel obstruction and formation of a fibrous cocoon around the peritoneal membrane. This inflammatory condition is associated with a high mortality rate; in the largest UK cohort study, 53% of patients died over a ten year period.
For those who survive, nutritional status can be compromised due to the presence of symptoms such as lack of appetite, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain and bloating. Many patients require nutrition support such as total parenteral nutrition or the use of oral nutritional supplements. The presence of these symptoms and the use of nutrition support can affect a patient's quality of life.
This study will examine the nutritional status of all patients who have been diagnosed with EPS for at least 5 years using a variety of measures including weight, body mass index, tricep skinfold, mid upper arm muscle circumference, handgrip strength and subjective global assessment. Quality of life will also be assessed using the EQ-5D questionnaire. Demographic information as well as information on the presence of gastro-intestinal symptoms, medication and nutritional management will also be collected. The most recent blood results will be used to obtain data for the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein and albumin.
Patients will be invited to an appointment at the hospital where the above information will be collected using a proforma and administered by a state registered dietitian.
