  • Research summary

There are currently no validated, effective treatments to aid recovery from Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). Skills training in affective and interpersonal regulation coupled with exposure work (STAIR-MPE) has, however, been shown to improve symptoms characteristic of CPTSD. This has led to the enhancement of STAIR-MPE into a new modular therapy for CPTSD, that is sequenced in a personalised manner. A recent review concluded that the development of effective multicomponent psychological interventions for people exposed to complex traumatic events is a research and clinical priority.

This study will follow MRC guidance for the development of complex interventions to design a digital guided self-help (GSH) programme for CPTSD that is systematically co-produced to maximise likely effectiveness. A prototype will be developed through modelling, using qualitative research methodology with input from stakeholders with lived experience of CPTSD and other relevant expertise. The prototype will then be piloted and refined on the basis of quantitative and qualitative evaluation of this phase of the study, with further stakeholder consultation.
