Research summary
Listening to music appears to help in the recovery of stroke survivors. However the mechanism(s) of how this happens is not well understand. An earlier pilot functional MRI study evaluated emotional and neural responses to music in healthy volunteers, and developed a protocol for the use of functional MRI scans in stroke patients. This protocol will be used to evaluate short-term neural and emotional responses to music in stroke survivors. This will test the tolerability and usability of functional MR imaging with concurrent music in a pilot group of stroke patients. In addition, we will evaluate how stroke patients find listening to music in terms of its’ practicability as an intervention. This information is important before embarking on a large scale trial exploring the benefit of music therapy in stroke patients. This pilot study will test the protocol and pave the way for a definitive study.
