Research summary
This study aims to validate the use of contrast ultrasound in measuring the blood supply to the muscles of the leg, and how this changes with exercise and vascular pathology.
Many diseases and clinical syndromes are caused by inadequate blood circulation – most notably peripheral arterial disease and diabetes, and treatments are aimed at preventing further tissue damage and restoring blood flow. Problems with large blood vessels are easily identified and treated, but the smaller blood vessels are hard to image. Diseases such as diabetes tend to affect the smaller blood vessels more, and if we are able to identify the microscopic problems with ultrasound, and look at what treatments best target these, we would be able to develop effective treatments a lot quicker.
