Research summary
Background: Emergency Laparotomy (EmLap) is a major operation that involves opening the abdomen and repairing any emergency problem. Approximately 27,000 patients undergo EmLap per year within the NHS. Despite a series of national projects to improve care, poor patient outcomes following EmLap remain common. Improving patient outcomes and standardising care in EmLap has been identified as a clinical priority. To be able to improve clinical processes, pathways and interventions in this setting requires an in-depth understanding of the current standards of post-operative care in EmLap.
Study Design: A prospective cohort study assessing clinical pathways, processes of care and interventions delivered in the post-operative emergency laparotomy (EmLap) setting and their impact on clinical, patient-reported and health economic outcomes.
Study Population: Adult patients ≥18 years old undergoing expedited, urgent or emergency abdominal surgery (EmLap) on the gastrointestinal tract. Patients undergoing EmLap for trauma, gynaecological conditions or complications of elective surgery will be excluded.
Outcomes: Participants will be assessed at 7 days, 30 days and 90 days post-operatively. Quality of life (QoL) and participant reported outcomes will be measured using the GIQLI, EQ-5D-5L and QoR-15 scores.REC name
