Research summary
Viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), generally referred to as the common cold anflulike illness, is a multi-symptom disease frequently associated with headache, muscle ache, fever, nasal congestion and sore throat. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) known as aspirin can help with pain, fever and inflammation associated with common cold. However, ASA is not expected to provide relief of all of the symptoms of the common cold. One of the most prominent symptoms of common colds is nasal congestion. Pseudoephedrine (PSE) is a compound widely used to relieve nasal congestion associated with common cold. It is reasonable to assume that a combination medicine of ASA and PSE may relieve most of the symptoms of an acute URTI in the treatment of the common cold by treating the pain related and fever symptoms and also nasal congestion. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of combination of oral ASA and PSE, compared with ASA or PSE alone in a placebo(dummy treatment that looks like the real thing) controlled design study.
