Research summary
Ischaemia with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA) is a type of heart disease where the small vessels which supply blood and oxygen to the heart muscle become dysfunctional rather than becoming blocked as in typical coronary artery disease. INOCA causes angina particularly upon exertion and appears to be more common in females. INOCA has only recently been recognised as a novel disease and therefore diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. This results in significant psychological effects upon patients who report feelings of anxiety and depression related to their condition. The introduction of the UK lockdown related to COVID-19 will have further impact on the diagnosis and treatment of this patient group as much of the non-COVID 19 related activities were paused. We therefore wish to assess how the wellbeing of patients who have been diagnosed or are suspected to suffer with INOCA have been affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. In the process of investigating this effect we wish to gather information about this population such as age, sex, comorbidities which may speed up identification of these patients or patients at risk of INOCA in the future.
