  • Research summary

People who wear a "glass eye" or ocular prosthesis seem particularly prone to developing dry eye symptoms. 90% will be affected by socket discharge, the majority on a daily basis. One of the main causes is obstruction of the oil-producing meibomian glands along the eyelid margins. This is due to a combination of tear deficiency, deposit build-up and micro-trauma of the "glass eye" rubbing on the inside of the eyelid.

By improving the surface finish of a "glass eye" from standard polish to a smoother contact lens polish, we hope to be able to improve both patient symptoms and the signs of deposit build-up on the prosthesis.
