Research summary
Research in the Centre for Psychedelic Research focuses on the use of psychedelic drugs in mental health care and as tools to probe the brain’s basis of consciousness. Many existing and upcoming studies in this centre and at the CIPPRes clinic focus on a mechanistic understanding of these compounds in the context of interventions within clinical populations using electroencephalography (EEG). There remains a need for validation of these measures in non-interventional settings within healthy control volunteers. The present study will be carried out to gather information on EEG parameters in healthy participants, and how these relate to other physiological, cognitive and psychological parameters. A series of iterative stages of the study will be conducted investigating a range of parameters to provide a multifaceted validation of EEG measures used within the centre for psychedelic research. This information will be useful in combination with upcoming studies in both patient populations and active drug conditions, for comparative purposes. This study will also benefit the wider field of EEG outside of the psychedelic context, as these methods are used in a wide range of health and disease research, as yet without rigorous validation.
