  • Research summary

We want to know if an educational video for patients improves their understanding of a particular procedure, performed by dermatologists, called ‘Mohs micrographic surgery’ (MMS).
There is evidence to suggest that video based education about basic dermatological procedures improves patient understanding when compared to standard methods. MMS is complicated and the concepts are difficult to grasp.

Any patient considered for MMS by a Dermatology Clinician working for East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHT) will be eligible. They will all receive our standard information (verbal education and our standard written information leaflet). Those who are randomised into the intervention arm will ALSO receive directions to an educational video about MMS. This can be watched online – though they will be invited to ask the receptionist desk if it is possible to watch the video in the department, or take home a DVD.

We will assess their understanding of MMS and their anxiety before they read the information leaflet and/or watch the video and assess again when they attend for their procedure. They will be asked to feed back about their satisfaction with MMS and the educational process a week after the procedure. We will also take note of any complications that occur (failing to attend for their appointment/going to the wrong location/wound complications).

It is anticipated that most questionnaires will be filled in at the clinic. However, sometimes patients will be asked to fill these in at home.

For any individual patient, the study will last from the moment they are considered for MMS until about a week after the procedure when they finish with their last questionnaire (usually within 3 months). We aim to be recruiting from August 2013 to June 2014.
