  • Research summary

Foreign Accent Syndrome is a rare condition where a person's speech takes on an accent different from their usual accent and which other people can think sounds 'foreign'. Most case reports describe foreign accent syndrome starting after a stroke or other brain injuries or diseases. There are also a small number of reports of Foreign Accent Syndrome occurring where there has not been a brain injury or disease. In some of these cases there are other functional (also called psychogenic, or conversion) neurological symptoms. This survey of people who describe themselves as having Foreign Accent Syndrome aims to find out more about Foreign Accent Syndrome both in people who have and have not had a stroke or brain injury or disease. In particular, this study aims to find out about common physical and psychological comorbidities, levels of disability and illness beliefs in patients with probable functional Foreign Accent Syndrome.
