Data collection arrangements
The Edinburgh Brain Bank will store and release brain samples from well defined clinical cohorts and controls, and also blood and CSF samples for biomarker studies. All tissues will be retrieved from fully consented post-mortem examinations, usually limited to the nervous system only. Post-mortem NHS hospital consent will be achieved for all non-procurator Fiscal examinations, and signed informed consent from relatives where a Procurator Fiscal instructed examination is required.
Research programme
The brain bank supports local, national and international research, and has over the pervious 15 years supported in excess of 500 translational research studies across the world, providing tens of thousands of samples and supporting multiple highly cited peer-reviewed research publications. A majority of the research groups are within the neuroscience community, particularly neurodegenerative disorders, but we do support other research groups such as cardiac research groups. We were able to support COVID19 related tissue studies during the early phases of the pandemic.
